BEST IN SHOW
The American Film Institute has come out with its list of the Top 10 TV shows/movies of 2004, and, sadly, Scrubs is nowhere to be found. Ditto Carnivale. Or Gilmore Girls. That said, it's hard to argue with most of the jury's picks: The Sopranos, The Shield, Nip/Tuck, Arrested Development, South Park, Lost (Charlie's alive!!), Deadwood, Curb Your Enthusiasm, Desperate Housewives and the HBO movie Something the Lord Made. The key word here being "most."
IN RELATED NEWS...
Being a film organization and all, the AFI also issued its list of the Top 10 movies of the year. And the winners (listed alphabetically) are: The Aviator, Collateral, Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind, Friday Night Lights, The Incredibles, Kinsey, Maria Full of Grace, Million Dollar Baby, Sideways and Spider-Man 2. Speaking of Sideways, the road-trip indie was also named the best pic of the year by the Los Angeles Film Critics Association and the New York Film Critics Online.
CHRIS CROSS
Just call him the comeback kid. After a rocky start, 33-year-old highway worker Chris Daugherty outplayed, outlasted and outwitted that powerful all-female alliance to win Survivor: Vanuatu Sunday night. He takes home $1 million, a new car and the honor of being the first Survivor champ to get bleeped during the live reunion show.
TWELVE PLUS TWENTY-NINE
Great capers! The A-list heist sequel Ocean's Twelve ransacked the weekend box office, making off with $40.9 million to nab the No. 1 spot. For those keeping score, that was roughly $3 million better than Ocean's Eleven opened with in 2001. Debuting at No. 2 was Wesley Snipes' Blade: Trinity, which sucked $16.1 million from moviegoers' pockets. For those keeping score, that was less than half what Blade II did in 2002. Meanwhile, after three weekends at No. 1, National Treasure fell to third with $10 million — bringing its total to $124.1 million. For those keeping score, it's time to find a hobby.
WHO'S BAD?
A porn magazine seized from Michael Jackson's Neverland ranch last year reportedly contained fingerprints belonging to the embattled pop star and the boy accusing him of child molestation. There's no word regarding the magazine's title or contents, but my money's on Highlights or Pottery Barn Kids.
SHORT CUTS
Ellen DeGeneres has separated from her girlfriend, actress-photographer Alexandra Hedison, according to the New York Post... ABC has ordered two additional episodes of George Lopez, bringing the show's season total to 24, Variety reports... A Maryland man is suing Wal-Mart for selling his daughter an Evanescence CD that contained a naughty word. Target?
SPANNING THE GLOBES
The 2005 Golden Globe Nominations were announced this morning in Los Angeles and, sadly, Scrubs is nowhere to be found. Ditto Carnivale. Or Gilmore Girls. (OK, that's not completely true: Scrubs did land a long-overdue nod for leading man Zach Braff. Hooray!) Not surprisingly, the Hollywood Foreign Press Association instead focused their attention on ABC's red-hot Desperate Housewives. The freshman dramedy snagged a leading five nominations, including best comedy series, best comedy actress for Marcia Cross, Teri Hatcher and Felicity Huffman, and best supporting actress for Nicollette Sheridan. (Eva Longoria will have to settle for that trophy she calls a lawn boy.) Joining Housewives in the best comedy category was Fox's Arrested Development, HBO's Entourage and Sex and the City, and NBC's Will & Grace. ABC's Lost nabbed a nod for best drama series, where it will face off against Fox's 24, FX's Nip/Tuck and HBO's Deadwood and The Sopranos. Elsewhere, Christine Lahti scored a surprise lead actress nod for the WB's struggling Jack and Bobby, Nip/Tuck's Julian McMahon and Joely Richardson were singled out but not costar Dylan Walsh, and the entire cast of Arrested Development was snubbed with the exception of Jason Bateman. Oh, and some actress from Law & Order: SVU got nominated. What's her name? Um... I know this... Oh, right — Mariska Freakin' Hargitay! Hooray! For a list of the nominees, click here.
MORE GLOBES
On the movie side, Alexander Payne's acclaimed road-trip comedy Sideways led the field with seven nominations, including best motion picture comedy, best actor for Paul Giamatti, best supporting actor for Thomas Haden Church and best supporting actress for Virginia Madsen. Other movies with multiple nods include The Aviator, Closer, Finding Neverland, Hotel Rwanda, Kinsey, Million Dollar Baby, The Incredibles, and The Phantom of the Opera. Jamie Foxx, meanwhile, walked off with acting nods for his leading role in Ray, his supporting work in Collateral and his TV-movie Redemption. For a list of the nominees, click here.
RECAST
Regis Philbin will sit in for an ailing Dick Clark as host of ABC's New Year's Rockin' Eve 2005, the network confirms. Clark suffered a minor stroke last week.
